Very sweet story of a shelter dog with a wonderful outcome.

Legit: Do you think vets are too lenient with obesity in pets?

Aww that almost made me cry especially the part that said, "All Edie needed was a hug." My family adopted a shelter puppy and she is the best dog ever!!

That just melted my heart. Some dogs just need a little bit of love don't they? <3

Yes I do wish that.

I think they are too lenient with the obese pets owners.

That is a tear jerker. Wonderful staff and adopter to see through her fear. Sadly, I've seen small dogs act that insanely frightened and anxious that live indoors, pampered, their whole lives and were just never socialized enough.

The "legit" Q: I think many vets broach the subject, and some are more gun-shy while others are direct. The direct approach takes long practice without being rude. Weight is a VERY sensitive topic with pet owners. They get offended because they feel guilty, as if they aren't taking optimum care of their pet, IMPOSSIBLE. It's also hard to break bad habits on the owners part, and rarely do owners comply with recommendations and directions at home. I'd say we recommend over 80% of pets lose weight, and perhaps 2% actually do that we see in clinic. I've actually been judged as "harping" on it too often to clients. But I just keep doing it, in the most approachable, educational, succinct, helpful and direct way possible. I'll chip away at that 80% until it drops a few digits at least.

Wow, This made me cry!!! So very sad and sweet.... Who knows what the poor baby had been through. So nice to see a happy ending :)
To answer your question... My vet was quick to tell me when my dog had gained a little too much weight. She went on a diet and got back to a good size. I think it's more that pet owners sometimes tend to spoil their pets by giving too much food or treats and don't realize that they are causing more harm than good. Some don't listen to the vet when they're told their pet is overweight.... Like my mother in law :( Her poor dog is huge!!!!
