Obesity and Pregnancy?

Obesity and Pregnancy? So I am clinically obese, as in, I'd need to lose like 50 pounds to be considered merely overweight. I have a 3 year old son, and I was obese when I got pregnant with him. Everything went really well. I really want to lose weight before having another child, but I am also aware that losing the weight will take a long time, time I don't want to wait on before conceiving again. Should I wait to get pregnant until I've lost it all? Will losing maybe 20 pounds help enough to be worth it, or is the risk to myself and my potential fetus too great?

If you care enough about your child you'd lose the weight first. There are so many health risks for the baby when the mother is obese. Don't make the pregnancy more difficult and dangerous for you and your baby, wait.

If you're 38, I'd just get pregnant again, but if you're not, loose the weight if you can. I am on my 5th pregnancy, two lost, I am 37 and obese - more then you, I have had healthy pregnancies (barring the miscarriages which can be chalked up to age), no diabetes, no hypertension until this pregnancy (leftover pregnancy induced hypertension from my last miscarriage), no pre-eclampsia, etc.. I have been very lucky and I am realizing that, most people will not be so lucky. I want one more child after this one but our plan is I'm going to get a LapBand and try to loose weight before the next pregnancy which may be as late as 4 years from now.

Really, it'd be better for you and your fetus in the future if you lost the weight, I know it sucks, I know it's sort of impossible, but the more I read and the more I look into the risks since I am fighting hypertension this pregnancy the more it's obvious it would be better not to be so heavy.

My best advice to you is to lose some weight before you get pregnant again. Because, obesity and pregnancy don't mix, it can be harmful to you and the baby. I would suggest losing at least 20-30 pounds before you get pregnant if not more, you will gain that weight back when you get pregnant but if you work out during your pregnancy it will be easier to lose the weight after you have the baby. good luck!

I think 20 lbs would help a lot. It's also possible to lose weight when pregnant. Don't diet at all. Diets aren't safe (even when not pregnant) because they deprive your body of things it needs. However, if you eat healthy and participate in moderate exercise (walking and swimming are both GREAT). You can lose weight while pregnant. I'm 34 weeks, I was overweight to start (still am) but I've only gained 9 lbs since I got pregnant. My doctor estimates that I've lost about 15lbs of fat. By the time I give birth she estimates I'll be 10 lbs less than I was when I conceived. And I really haven't done a lot....just ate healthier. I would've exercised but I was on bed rest and now I'm just in too much discomfort and pain lol.

My point is, go ahead and try to lose weight while you try to conceive. You can continue losing when pregnant, just careful to do it safely.

edit: being overweight does not mean you'll have gestational diabetes. Your diet during pregnancy does. Hypertension and pre-eclampsyia come from problems with your heart rate. While it is more common in overweight mothers it's still not very common. As for other complications that come with being overweight: yes they are related, but they are still rare.
