I don't know if there is one field but I think gastric surgeons, dietitians, nutritionists, physical therapists, plastic surgeons, psychiatrists, psychologists, and probably others can be effective in the treatment of obesity.
Brrrr
It's called Bariatric Medicine.
There are very few physicians who do this and nothing else. Those that do are usually based in a Weight Loss clinic and advertise in this way. They prescribe a wide variety of medications to support rapid weight loss. Be careful: a few are unscrupulous. Use only a board certified MD or DO who is a member of the American Board of Bariatric Medicine.
Almost every primary care physician (internist, family medicine and pediatrics) treats obesity because it is one of the 10 most common diseases in the USA.
If your PCP discovers an underlying disease that is the cause of the obesity (such as thyroid disorders or diabetes) you may be referred to an endocrinologist (hormone expert) or other specialist.
Morbidly obese patients (or lazy rich patients) may see a bariatric surgery specialist and receive one of the many different intestinal altering procedures for weight loss.
Orignal From: what is the field of medicine that specializes in the treatment of obesity?
