Itching powder on your hands so you can't hold a fork?

Rhianna
Good answer, Chris.

There are rare genetic (perhaps) and metabolic disorders, medication (e.g. prednisolone) and issues such as an under-active thyroid that can cause people to gain weight, however for the most part, it all boils down to lack of exercise and excess eating. You don't need any medication to resolve this problem, what you need to do is eat less and do more. Weight control is an input and output balance.

The quacks don't like that statement because they often don't like to face facts that they are at fault for their weight gain. They like to blame it on some fictitious illness such as "leaky gut syndrome" or "adrenal fatigue" or even blame mainstream medicine or the quality of the food they eat for their weight gain. People prefer to hear that being overweight is not a result of their lack of self control, basically the quacks tell you what you want to hear. And lets face it, hearing that something else is to blame for your excess weight is more emotionally satisfying then having an MD telling you, that you are fat because you eat too much.

I'm quite interested in the role of complex and refined carbs in some of our health issues, however it usually always boils down to people not eating in moderation.

Not withstanding physical or mental illnesses, anti-obesity = eat less and exercise more. There are no magic powders that actually work. Though there are plenty of hucksters ready to sell them to you. If it were that easy, we wouldn't be currently enduring this obesity problem, right? Plus we wouldn't have 1000s of different weight loss products on the market. Don't be scammed.

"Warning signs -

The weight loss scheme or product:

lacks scientific evidence or demonstrated links between the result and the effects of the program, food, supplement, gadget or process being promoted
is sold outside normal commercial distribution channels. For example, through the internet, by unqualified individuals or mail order advertisements
claims effortless, large or fast weight loss such as 'lose 30 kilos in 30 days' or 'lose weight while you sleep'
claims that you can achieve weight loss without exercise, or without managing food or energy intake
fails to recommend medical supervision, particularly for low-calorie diets
claims to reduce fat or cellulite in specific areas of the body
uses terms such as 'miraculous breakthrough'
recommends the exclusive use of any type of gadget
claims it is a treatment for a wide range of ailments and nutritional deficiencies
promotes a particular ingredient, compound or food as the key factor of success
demands large advance payments or requires you to enter into long-term contracts.

Protect yourself from weight loss scams:

If it looks too good to be true—it probably is.
Remember there are no magic pills or safe options for rapid weight loss.
Be very careful about offers for medicines, supplements or other treatments: always seek the advice of your health care professional.
ALWAYS get independent advice if an offer involves significant money, time or commitment.
Read all the terms and conditions of any offer very carefully: claims of free or very cheap offers often have hidden costs."

The best place to start is a doctor. I hope this is of help.
