Can diabetes from obesity disappear?

Can diabetes from obesity disappear? If someone gets diabetes from being overweight, is it possible for the body to start responding to insulin again? I think I saw it on some weight loss show (biggest loser?) where the trainer told a guy that he had great news, his body was starting to respond to insulin again.
Was he just showing symptoms, and not truly diabetic, or did his body reverse the disease?

Absolutely. Lose the weight.

It can, BUT . . .

You are NOT CURED. There is NO CURE for diabetes, only control. So when a person loses weight they are CONTROLLING the disease not curing it. if they then return to their "old habits" the diabetes will return.

By the time symptoms show up, a person has been diabetic for months, if not years. Since most people won't go to a doctor until the pain is unbearable, it has been found that most Type 2 Diabetics have been diabetic for 5-7 YEARS before they actually get diagnosed.

In the mean time, there is much permanent damage that is done. First, the pancreas may have been overworked to the point of failure, and that may not heal. Second, damage to the kidneys and eyes often doesn't heal. So even when the symptoms of diabetes disappear, the effects can be permanent.

So yes, by all means lose weight. Keep strict control of your diet and exercise.

The goal is to PREVENT diabetes, because it cannot be cured.

Lets get something straight. Being overweight does NOT cause a person to get diabetes. This is a misconception that way too many have, and they just keep repeating it. It is from not knowing about the disease. Diabetes (type 2) can actually cause a person to put on weight. Diabetes is from the pancreas not functioning properly. In many people that have type 2 and are overweight, they may most likely be insulin resistant. This is when the pancreas is making more insulin than it should, and the body is not using is correctly. It does not come from eating too much sugar, or the wrong foods. But in answer to your question, yes, it is possible for a person who has type 2 diabetes to be able to control their disease by diet and exercise. This does NOT mean that they are no longer a diabetic, it simply means they are controlling the diabetes without having to use medications. Many people are told that they are "prediabetic" or "borderline" diabetic by their doctors because they have "slightly" elevated blood sugars. Most doctors are getting away from using these terms because they have come to the conclusion (after many studies) that these people are type 2 diabetics. Plain and simple. They may control their diabetes by learning good nutrition and getting daily exercise. However.... the diabetes does NOT go away, or reversed. (as some like to call it) Once a person has diabetes, they always have it. Even if they don't have to take medications, once they stray from their tightly controlled diet, the symptoms will start to reappear and the blood sugars will start to rise again. Most type 2 diabetics that control their disease with diet and exercise will most likely have to take some kind of medication later in life anyhow. Diabetes is a progressive disease, and even when it is tightly contolled, it starts to take toll on the persons body. In the type 2 who is insulin resistant, years later, they usually find that their pancreas has gotten tired, weak and worn from all the excess work it has done in the past, and now can't make enough insulin that the body requires. Some of us end up on insulin because other oral medications we used will no longer work. If a person is type 2 and overweight, losing some of that weight will definatily help with the control of the disease, but it can only be cured by having a pancreas transplant.

There is no cure for diabetes but if you are type 2 it is possible to control it through diet and exercise. That is a goal of mine. You must lose weight in order to do this but that does not guarantee it.

Just think of it as a kind of cancer. you can never be "cured" but it can go into remission. just like diabetes. you can never be rid of it but you can control it by diet and exercise and even get to the point where you would't need to take any medication.
