Can weight problems be helped?

Can weight problems be helped?I got into an argument with a guy in a forum that swears up and down that he can't lose weight. He also claims that most overweight people can't help it and I find this hard to belive. I will admit that some people can't help it, but surely the majority can. He blames it on his slow matabolism, but I can't see why eating more fruits and veggies, drinking water, and controlling portions, and showed him statistics on the rising rate of obesity in the U.S. and he still maintains that it doesn't matter what people eat, or if they exercise, that a lot of people just can't lose weight. Is this true?
I told him that he needed to keep his heart rate up for more than 15 minutes to lose weight, and he said that he keeps it up for 6 hours strait at his job, he works in retail.

Well, food is an addiction. An addiction that you just can not get away from. When you have been overweight all your life and you must change your lifestyle in order to lose the weight, that is a hard undertaking. I believe that regardless of anything a person can lose weight. They just have to have the willpower and a good support system. I believe that he has convinced his self that he can not help but be overweight, and ultimately this will kill him.

If he is keeping his heart rate up for 6 hours then he should be mega thin. His heart rate may be higher than just sitting but it may be possible that he is not getting it up high enough.
