Do you think being 50 and overweight is impacting my chances of getting hired?

Do you think being 50 and overweight is impacting my chances of getting hired? All things being equal except age and weight, how much do you think this reduces my likelihood of being hired? How much would you atribute to age and how much to weight? (by medical definition I am obese.)

DJ B
sadly yes.

I would attribute almost equal amounts to both. Basically, because of your age, you will only be with the company for 10-20 years rather than 30-40, and they want someone who will be there longer, and able to work for longer. Due to the obesity, it will likely cost them more to insure you. Both of these are a potential profit loss for the company. You may want to lose some weight, as that will increase your chances of being hired.

Your likehood is zero. I am over 50 yrs. and weigh the same as I did when I was 20yrs. I still change jobs and always get hired immediately.

Both weight and age can work against you. But more than anything else, your attitude and confidence count. Also depends on the role you are applying for.

We all know that it's illegal to discriminate based on age. But it's not based on weight.

If you were a employer and were faced with a choice of two equally qualified people to fill a position and one was very overweight and the other was not. Which one would you pick.

I know this is not fair, but employers think about the impact future employees will have on their insurance cost and medical leave.

To answer your question, there is no way to actually know because every employer looks at things differently.

Good luck.
