He's lost a few pounds since feeding him this but it may still be too many calories for my lazy cat. I try to play with him but his idea of play is to watch me try to get him to play with his toys. LoL
Anyway, all that just to ask your thoughts on, in essence, replacing his canned food with jarred baby food like chicken or turkey. I looked at the label and it's very basic. Not a lot of additives. High in protein, no grains or other fillers, and best of all, really low in calories. Maybe I could mix this with his dry food. What do you think?

buy some catnip and rub it all over his toys and he should play with them more often.if the scent starts to go away rub more catnip in.or you could just sprinkle it around the floor and he'll go crazy

I'm glad you were strong enough to go against now-accepted "diet" of a domestic cat and refuse to feed him what his vet wanted. Remember vets only get about 8 hours of nutritioinal training in school and it is almost always taught by a pet food company representive. Sad but true. The amount of calories is not important. It is the quality of the calories. A domestic cat is still an obligate carnivore, meaning she must have raw meat, raw, appropriate-sized bones and raw fat and organs. There is no fear of food poisoning; it does not exist in an obligate carnivore. Since you've gone as far as Wellness, the better of the commerical crap, you'll find your kitty will slim down quite nicely on a species-appropriate diet. Since your vet doesn't remember basic biology or zoology, you might want to call a zoologiest or even a zoo for help and meanwhile visit a site like rawfedcats.org. The Scientific Classification System does not list a cat as an cereal-munching omnivore. Kibble is a 70-year old fad and we see obese cats every day, with diabetes and rotten teeth. In reality, there is no such thing in a obligate carnivore. Also, no baby food, please! It is not "basic". It is filled with added water to stretch it further. Remember the two most famous baby food companies were both caught purposefully adulterating food products for infants. Colored and sugared water for apple juice. Do your homework and visit rawfedcats.org and have fun with your healthy new cat!

I think if he is losing weight on the food he is on now, I would not change it. It is unhealthy for cats to lose too much weight at one time. Think of it this way - let's just say you weighed 150 pounds and lost 10 pounds in 1 week - that would be 15% of your body weight - that would not be healthy. So think of the cat the same way - if the cat weighs let's say 20 pounds and lost 4 pounds that would be 20% of its body weight. So just give it time and he should tone down - believe me, my cat sleeps 23 hours a day - but she is also 15 years old - but I have had to cut back her food so she is at a healthy weight. Hope this helps! Good luck.

NO! Cat food is specially formulated to contain the right types of protein, especially Taurine, for cats. This is a building block of protein that they can't make and get very sick without the right amounts. It is not in high enough amounts in people food. Also, most cats do not need to have canned food (dry is plenty nutrition and much better for teeth)- check the feeding directions on whichever brand of cat food (NOT people food!!!) and feed that amount or a little less.

Canned baby food isn't a well balanced cat food. It also may contain spices and seasonings that a cat shouldn't have such as garlic. I suggest that you switch him to a senior diet. This has less protein and calories which means that he wont taking in as much weight. Have they run tests on him to see if there is a health issue as to why he is so big?? There are some illnesses that can cause a cat to be obese like hypothyroidism (less common in cats but does happen) and diabetes. I really strongly suggest not giving him baby food. This really isn't ment to be in a cats diet. Good luck
